How to Practice Music Effectively: A Parent's Guide to Better Sessions

Most kids don't need more practice time — they need better practice. Here's how to turn short sessions into real progress.

If your child is taking music lessons, you've probably heard the same advice: 'just have them practice 30 minutes a day.' But what does that actually mean? Sitting with an instrument for half an hour isn't the same as practicing — and kids figure that out fast. The good news is that effective practice is a skill, and like any skill, it can be taught.

Short, focused beats long and scattered

Research on skill acquisition is clear: spaced, focused repetition builds memory far faster than marathon sessions. For pre-teens and teens, two 10-minute focused blocks often beat one 30-minute sit-down. The goal is quality attention, not clock-watching.

Help your child pick one small, specific goal for each session — 'play the G-to-C chord change cleanly four times in a row' is a goal. 'Play guitar for 20 minutes' is not.

Practice the hard part, not the fun part

Kids naturally gravitate to what they already sound good at. That feels good, but it doesn't build skill. Encourage them to spend the first half of a session on the measure or chord change that's giving them trouble, then reward themselves with the fun stuff afterward.

A simple rule: if it feels easy, you're probably reviewing. If it feels a little uncomfortable, you're growing.

Make it slow, then make it right

The fastest way to learn a passage is to play it slowly enough that you can do it perfectly, then gradually increase speed. Mistakes practiced at full speed become habits that are hard to unlearn. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

End on a win

Always finish a practice session by playing something your child enjoys and sounds good doing. It leaves the instrument associated with a positive feeling — which makes the next session easier to start.
